Chicago Cubs Inside Pitch 2008-06-06
Nobody will ever accuse the Cubs of being a base-stealing team, but they rank seventh in the NL with 42 steals.

Their six steals Tuesday at San Diego were the most since they stole six at Montreal in May 2000.

Manager Lou Piniella would like to see even more of it.

"In fact, I gave the option to steal more than we actually ran," he said of the six-steal game. "I was hoping we'd run a little more than we did. We've got a semblance of speed here. We don't have what you'd call a true base stealer, but we do have tactical speed that we can use, and these kids work at it, and we're not scared to use it."

Shortstop Ryan Theriot leads the Cubs in stolen bases with 11, followed by Alfonso Soriano with six.

CUBS 5, DODGERS 4: The Cubs jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the fourth inning only to watch the Dodgers claw back and tie the game in the eighth when Jeff Kent hit a solo homer off reliever Bob Howry.

Kosuke Fukudome and Mark DeRosa homered in the comeback. Fukudome hit an RBI single in the ninth to score the go-ahead run.

Ryan Dempster started well for the Cubs but began falling behind hitters and lasted only 5 1/3 innings. Kerry Wood struck out Matt Kemp with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to earn his 17th save.
