Cubszone.com | Chicago Cubs News, cubs Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Manager Lou Piniella had to take care of a sticky situation Wednesday.
Left fielder Alfonso Soriano didn't run out a long drive in the eighth inning of the Cubs' 10-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Apparently thinking the ball would go out, Soriano stood at home plate and watched it, ending up with a single off the wall instead of a double. The next inning, Braves rookie pitcher Francisley Bueno threw a pitch at Soriano's head and got kicked out of the game. Soriano has admired some of his batted balls in the past, and Piniella wanted to stop it before it resulted in more problems. Apparently, he did so.
"I talked to Alfonso about it," Piniella said. "I told him that he's one of our leaders here, and there's no need for that. He agrees, and he says it won't happen again. It's over."
"I apologized to him, and I apologized to my teammates," Soriano said. "I said that's not going to happen again."
Soriano seems tired of getting hit by the Braves. On June 11, Braves pitcher Jeff Bennett broke Soriano's left hand with a pitch. Last year, the Braves threw at Soriano after he admired a homer.
"They like to do that, but it's part of the game," Soriano said. "Nothing we can do about it. We've got pitchers who can throw to hitters, too."
There were no incidents in the second game, won 8-0 by the Cubs.
CUBS 10, BRAVES 2 (first game): C Geovany Soto homered, doubled and drove in four runs, and CF Jim Edmonds homered, doubled and drove in four during a rout in the first game of the day-night doubleheader. Right-hander Jason Marquis evened his record at 7-7 by working 5 1/3 innings and giving up six hits and two runs.
CUBS 8, BRAVES 0 (second game): In the nightcap, the Cubs scored four runs in the first inning. RF Kosuke Fukudome keyed the rally with a two-run single. RHP Rich Harden worked five innings, giving up five hits. However, he walked five, running his pitch count to 92.
