Chicago Cubs Notes, Quotes 2008-05-29

Chicago Cubs Notes, Quotes 2008-05-29
--CF Jim Edmonds did not start Wednesday's game even though the Dodgers started RHP Derek Lowe against the Cubs. Edmonds had been platooning with right-handed-hitting Reed Johnson, but Cubs manager Lou Piniella said the matchup of Edmonds vs. Lowe was not a good one. Edmonds is 5-for-30 (.167) lifetime against Lowe.

--1B Derrek Lee entered Wednesday with seven game-winning RBI, tying him with five others for the major league lead. He was joined Wednesday night by LF Alfonso Soriano, who recorded his seventh game-winning RBI with a single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Cubs a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers.

--RHP Carlos Zambrano's 130 pitches in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Dodgers represented his highest since he threw 136 during a complete-game victory over the Phillies on May 8, 2005. Zambrano's previous high this year was 114 in a 7-0 win at Washington on April 26. He pitched seven innings in that game. The quality start was Zambrano's 10th of the season.

--SS Ryan Theriot walked to start a ninth-inning rally Wednesday that enabled the Cubs to tied the Dodgers 1-1. Theriot also singled and has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 home games and five straight. Theriot is batting .311 with a .393 on-base percentage.

--RF Kosuke Fukudome beat out an infield grounder in the ninth inning to load the bases and help the Cubs rally. He also singled in the fourth, giving him 19 multi-hit games this year, second on the team behind SS Ryan Theriot.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Most losses in a row for the Cubs this year through May 25. The Cubs were the only major league club not to have lost three games in a row this year.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You can see our division alone, the Central, you don't have a team in the division playing under .500 at home. That tells you something. What it tells me is it's going to be a scramble." -- Manager Lou Piniella, on his team's difficulty winning on the road.
