--RHP Kerry Wood threw a simulated game Sunday, this time without the protective pad on his right index finger, which has been bothered by blister. If Wood responds well Monday, it's possible the Cubs could activate him by Friday. Wood has not pitched since July 11.
--LF Alfonso Soriano extended his hitting streak to eight games. He's 15-for-34 during the streak. He and Aramis Ramirez, who also homered, are tied for the team lead in homers, with 19. --RHP Carlos Marmol, who went reeling into the All-Star break, saved Sunday's game and has given up no earned runs in eight games (9 IP) since the break.
--LHP Ted Lilly has turned in four straight quality starts and 10 in his last 12 starts.
--RHP Jon Lieber, who has been on the DL since July 18, will make a rehab appearance Tuesday for Class A Peoria. Lieber seems well over a strained right foot, but the Cubs have no room for him now on the pitching staff.
--RHP Jeff Samardzija earned a hold and enjoyed his longest outing of the season, pitching 2 1/3 innings in relief of RHP Carlos Zambrano. Samardzija gave up one hit and no runs while walking one and striking out one.
BY THE NUMBERS: 1.000 -- RHP Carlos Zambrano has a perfect 6-0 record this year at Wrigley Field. Since 1956, the best winning percentage by a Cubs pitcher at home is .923, set by Jon Lieber, who went 12-1 at home in 2001.
