Cubszone.com | Chicago Cubs News, cubs Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Jon Lieber pitched three innings Tuesday in a minor league rehab start for Class A Peoria. Lieber has out since July 11 with a strained right foot. Lieber said he feels fine, but the Cubs have no room for him in the bullpen, and there is no timetable for his return. The Cubs may keep Lieber on the DL until Sept. 1, when rosters can expand.
--2B Mark DeRosa's grand slam in Wednesday's third inning was the fourth of his career and his second this year. DeRosa hit a grand slam June 30 at San Francisco. DeRosa also hit his 20th double of the season, giving him three consecutive years of at least 20 doubles. He's 11-for-31 over his last 10 games. DeRosa hit .195 in July. --LF Alfonso Soriano hit his second three-run homer in two days. Since the All-Star break, Soriano is 23-for-66 (.348) with six homers, 15 RBIs, a .389 on-base percentage and a .697 slugging percentage.
--RHP Jason Marquis may have made his last start for a while. With off days Thursday, Monday and Aug. 18, manager Lou Piniella may skip Marquis at least one time. Marquis is 7-7 with a 4.73 ERA. The offense helped him snap a four-game losing streak. His most recent victory came June 21. The Cubs scored 11 runs while Marquis was on the mound for the second time this year.
--RHP Jeff Samardzija finished his third game since coming up July 25. He recorded his third consecutive scoreless outing and lowered his ERA to 1.93. Walks were a big concern while Samardzija was starting in the minor leagues, but he's given up only three while striking out 10 in 9 1/3 innings.
--SS Ryan Theriot exited in the seventh inning with a sore left foot. He fouled a ball off the foot two innings earlier. Theriot is day-to-day.
BY THE NUMBERS: 1.000 -- RHP Carlos Zambrano has a perfect 6-0 record this year at Wrigley Field. Since 1956, the best winning percentage by a Cubs pitcher at home is .923, set by Jon Lieber, who went 12-1 at home in 2001.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Oh, I don't know about statements. We came in here knowing that Milwaukee was playing solid baseball. We came in here with a purpose in mind, to win some baseball games, and that's exactly what we did." -- Manager Lou Piniella, on whether last week's sweep of the Brewers was a statement.
