Chicago Cubs Notes, Quotes 2008-08-27
--RHP Carlos Marmol picked up his 25th hold of the season with a scoreless eighth inning. That ties a club record shared by Bob Scanlan (1993) and Jeff Fassero (2001). He struck out two of the four Pirates he faced, walking one.

--INF/OF Mark DeRosa extended his hitting streak to eight games. He's 15-for-34 during the streak. DeRosa played right field in place of Kosuke Fukudome, who got the day off against Pirates LHP Zach Duke.

--LF Alfonso Soriano committed his second error in two games in the first inning, when he allowed Jack Wilson's single to get under his glove. Soriano dropped a flyball Tuesday. He also went 2-for-4 with a double and a caught-stealing. He's batting .294 with a .349 on-base percentage.

--RHP Jason Marquis turned in his sixth quality start in his last 12 and his 10th overall. He improved to 9-7. The Cubs' fifth starter is looking to join RHPs Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano and LHP Ted Lilly as a double-digit winner.

--The Cubs have won nine series in a row of two or more games for the first time since 1907, when they won 10 in a row. Since July 24, the Cubs are 9-0-1 in 10 series. They're 33 games over .500 for the first time since 1945, the season of their last NL pennant.

--CF Reed Johnson went 1-for-4 and has gone 34-for-79 over his last 28 games to raise his average from .266 to .313.

BY THE NUMBERS: 650 -- The Cubs' single-season record for walks drawn by their batters in a season, set in 1975. The Cubs are on pace to break that record by two this year. It's a far cry from recent Cubs teams, including last year, when they finished 15th in the NL with 500 walks.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We have a lot of confidence in ourselves. We trust each other. It's not a two-man show, a three-man show. It's a bunch of guys strewn throughout the lineup who are capable of getting it done." -- INF/OF Mark DeRosa, who homered in four consecutive games last week.
