Chicago Cubs Roster Report 2009-04-08

Chicago Cubs Roster Report 2009-04-08
The Cubs got through spring training relatively unscathed from a health standpoint, but manager Lou Piniella was eager to see his regular-season lineup intact after getting C Geovany Soto and CF Kosuke Fukudome back from the World Baseball Classic. The rotation looks strong, and the only real issue was how Piniella was going to fill out of the middle of his bullpen, an area that looked shaky at times during the Cactus League season.

PLAYER NEWS:

--C Geovany Soto left Tuesday's game in the sixth inning because of what the Cubs said was soreness in his right shoulder. Soto was hit by a pitch on his upper body in the second inning, but the Cubs said the ailment wasn't related to that. The club said Soto felt sore while throwing to second base in the third, attempting to throw out Kaz Matsui trying to steal.

--RF Milton Bradley had his left ankle wrapped but was in the starting lineup. Bradley turned the ankle while hitting the first-base bag Monday in running out a pop fly. Manager Lou Piniella left Bradley in the outfield in the ninth inning, raising some eyebrows. Piniella called Bradley a good outfielder and said he does not plan to regularly take him out for a defensive replacement. At the plate, Bradley is off to an 0-for-7 start with a walk.

--LF Alfonso Soriano has homered in both games. He's the eighth Cub to do so. The last Cub to homer in the first two games of the season was Scott Servais in 1996. Soriano is 3-for-10 in the first two games.

--1B Derrek Lee notched his first hit of the season in the third inning, an RBI single. Lee was 0-for-4 with a strikeout Monday.

--SS Ryan Theriot was on base three of his four times up. He doubled, walked and singled after getting a walk, a single and hitting a sacrifice fly Monday. Of the six balls the right-handed-hitting Theriot has put into play, five have gone to right field.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Rich Harden (chronic right shoulder problems) had the double whammy of coming down with a bad case of food poisoning late in camp. The Cubs were looking at a total of four spring starts for Harden, who is slated to start the fourth game of the regular season. The velocity on the fastball was in the low-90s, and both he and the Cubs say the shoulder is healthy.

INF Aaron Miles (sore right shoulder) nursed the injury through the spring. The Cubs want him to fill in at second base, third base and shortstop. But the shoulder limited him mainly to second base for the second half of the Cactus League season.
