Chicago Cubs closer Kerry Wood (finger) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Wood was expected to miss at least the next two games with a blister on his right index finger. He'll be eligible to return Sunday, July 27. He last pitched July 11, meaning the Cubs could make the move retroactive to July 12. Wood could therefore be activated Sunday, July 27.Setup man Carlos Marmol will close games in Wood's absence. Marmol is having a down year by last year's standards. He's 2-3 with three saves, a 4.05 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. He has struck out 70 batters in 53 1/3 innings, though. The high ERA can be explained by the seven homers Marmol has allowed thus far along with his combined 8.83 ERA in June and July. He has surrendered just 29 hits - so he's not being pummeled.
Pick up Marmol immediately, if possible. Fantasy owners may have dropped him due to his shaky numbers, but he was drafted in many mixed leagues, making his availability unlikely.
Place Wood on your bench in all formats. He's not expected to be out for long, but you should be prepared in case this lasts longer because a blister on his pitching hand could linger.
