Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig says he's proud of how far the sport has come in attempting to eliminate performance-enhancing drugs.
"It's been an interesting experience for me in the respect that we've cleaned the game up," Selig said yesterday during a spring training game between Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs in Arizona. "I'm proud of where we are." If there's work still to be done, Selig said, it's in being able to test for human growth hormone.
"There's not a test, regardless of what people say," Selig said. "If there's a test we'll use it. I can't wait to sit down and tell you that we now have a test for HGH."
MILLER A JAY: Add Wade Miller to the list of pitchers trying to revive their careers with the Blue Jays.
The former Houston Astros ace has agreed to a minor-league deal with the team pending a physical, a source told The Canadian Press. The right-hander will get a double-A deal if he passes and will not attend big-league spring training.
Miller, 32, has struggled with injuries since the 2004 season, and had previously attempted comebacks with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs before taking the 2008 season off.
The Blue Jays have two other reclamation projects at their big-league camp, Matt Clement and Mike Maroth.
Twins LOCK UP BAKER: Right-hander Scott Baker has agreed to a $15.25 million (U.S.), four-year deal with the Minnesota Twins.
Baker, 27, went 11-4 with a 3.45 ERA in a career-best 28 starts last season. He is 28-24 with a 4.23 ERA in four seasons, all with the Twins.
